Onno Meijer

My research field is neuroendocrinology, and my work focusses on adrenal glucocorticoid hormones and adaptation to stress. My interests include regulation of hormone levels, their effects on the emotion and cognition, and their effects on metabolism. Within the Einthoven Laboratories we work on the effects of novel ligands for stress steroid receptors, the glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid receptors in relation to metabolic health. We are particularly interested in the use of selective receptor modulators, that combine agonistic and antagonistic properties based on selective activation of downstream signaling pathways. We have observed beneficial effects of such modulators in metabolic syndrome mouse models and are using them to gain more insight in the (acute) beneficial and (long term) maladaptive effects of stress steroids in metabolic health.
